Triumphant Ethiopia

In a time when most of Africa was being invaded, devided and subdued by European empires, one nation stood defiant. No chains. No flags raised above its mountains but its own.

"Ethiopia" a kingdom of ancient Christian faith, warrior kings, and harsh highlands stopped a European colonial power twice.

Ethiopia defeated a European power on the battlefield and preserved its sovereignty. It crashed the Italy’s imperial dreams.

In the he year  1896, at the rocky highlands near the town of Adwa, northern Ethiopia, a massive Ethiopian force faced a modern, well-equipped Italian army with little expectation to emerge victorious.

Emperor Menelik II, united Ethiopia’s scattered provinces into a single war army.

Beside him wad Empress Taytu Betul, who had a strategic mind.

Menelik had prepared for this war. He imported modern rifles and artillery from France and Russia. He had up to 100,000 troops, including cavalry, riflemen, and warriors bearing traditional spears and shields.

He knew the terrain mountains, narrow passes, and dry riverbeds the Italians could not master.

The Italians, led by General Baratieri, marched in with about 17,000 soldiers, confident that they could force Ethiopia into becoming a protectorate.

But they had underestimated Menelik and they had little knowledge on the Ethiopian geography, and made a fatal mistake in strategy by splitting their forces in unfamiliar grounds.

On March 1, 1896, the Ethiopian army overwhelmed the Italian divisions, and within hours, the battlefield was filled with the bodies of colonial troops.

Many of the Italians were killed and captured. The Battle of Adwa ended in a humiliating defeat for Italy and a historic victory for Africa.

Ethiopia’s independence was formally recognized in the Treaty of Addis Ababa.

Mussolini’s Revenge and the Spirit of Resistance (1935–1941)

Italy returned this time under the fascist dictator Benito Mussolini, who sought revenge for Adwa. He was armed with tanks, aircraft, and illegal chemical weapons. Italy launched a brutal invasion in 1935.

Despite the bravery of Ethiopian fighters, the modern Italian war machine was overwhelming. Emperor Haile Selassie I made a powerful appeal to the League of Nations in Geneva: “It is us today. It will be you tomorrow.”

But the world was quiet.

Italy occupied Ethiopia in 1936. But unlike other colonial conquests, it didn’t end there.

Ethiopians never stopped resisting. Guerrilla fighters known as the Arbegnoch ("Patriots") launched attacks on Italian forces, disrupting communication lines, ambushing convoys, and keeping the dream of freedom alive in the mountains and forests.

In 1941, when the World War II gained momentum, Britain and Ethiopian forces launched a joint counter-offensive from Sudan.

The Ethiopian with their guerrilla warfare technique, joined forces with British-led troops.

On May 5, 1941, Haile Selassie re-entered Addis Ababa, victorious. Ethiopia had not just endured it had reclaimed itself.

The Adwa victory became a beacon for anti-colonial movements across Africa and the Caribbean. Marcus Garvey spoke of it. Nelson Mandela was inspired by it. To this day, Ethiopians celebrate Adwa Day as a national holiday.
